Bits of wisdom: „The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel”

If you find yourself feeling sad one day, watch „The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.” If you’re having a good day and want to make it even better, watch „The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.” Not only does it star some of the most talented British actors, but it’s a story you’ll always remember. A beautiful contemplation on loss, the invincibility of time, and the courage to start over and make sense of every single day you’re given.

Here are some of the quotes that stuck with me after I watched the movie and its sequel, „The Second Best Marigold Hotel.”

***

There is no past that we can bring back by longing for it. Only a present that builds and creates itself as the past withdraws.

***

The only real failure is the failure to try. And the measure of success is how we cope with disappointment. As we always must. We came here, and we tried. All of us, in our different ways. Can we be blamed for feeling we’re too old to change? Too scared of disappointment to start it all again? We get up every morning, we do our best. Nothing else matters.

***

– Nothing here has worked out quite as I expected.
– Most things don’t. But sometimes what happens instead is the good stuff.

***

Initially you’re overwhelmed. But gradually you realize it’s like a wave. Resist, and you’ll be knocked over. Dive into it, and you’ll swim out the other side.

***

Remember you are everything, or you are nothing. If you are everything, then your heart is so big it can hold all of humanity within itself, you have no jealousy or narrowness. You are in the heart of every creature and every creature is in your heart. There is only bliss.

***

You have no idea now what you will become, don’t try and control it. Let go. That’s when the fun starts. Because as I once heard someone say „There’s no present like the time”.

***

There’s no such thing as an ending; just a place where you leave the story.

***

There’s nothing I respect more than someone planting trees under whose shade they may never sit.

***

Sometimes it seems to me that the difference between what we want and what we fear is the width of an eyelash.

***

You know, there’s a long list of things I don’t care for: doctors, sunburn, mosquitoes, people who outstay their welcome… I could go on forever. But there is one thing I cannot bear, and that’s self-pity. It destroys everything around it. Now don’t be that idiot. Don’t let that happen.

***

A happy conclusion to a slightly bumpy journey. That’s really the point isn’t it, for all relationships, the journey. It’s not enough to stand still. There’s gotta be… progress. Movement towards something. Because the really frustrating thing is we could be madly happy. And not to go after that, and not to take the risk when it’s so close you could almost reach out and… touch it. The great and terrible thing about life, there’s just so much bloody… potential. All of which is almost certainly nonsense, and I’ve no idea what I’m talking about.

***

This is a new and different world. The challenge is to cope with it. Not just cope but thrive.

***

You can have anything you want. You just need to stop waiting for someone to tell you that you deserve it.

***

How many new lives can we have? As many as we like!
