Isabel Allende and her husband, Willie Gordon, separated after 27 years of marriage, the Chilean writer announced today.
“As the news got out already, I have to confirm that Willie and I are separated. It is very sad because we had been together for 27 years and we have shared the best and the worst of our lives. This has been a well thought decision but we remain best friends, taking turns to care for the dogs, Olivia and Dulce, and helping each other,” Allende wrote to her fans on her Facebook page today. Still, the famous author has spoken about her separation before, in a recent interview that she gave to promote her latest novel, “The Japanese Lover”, published in Spanish on the 28th of May. The English version of the book will come out around November 3rd.
Isabel Allende and Willie Gordon met in 1988, when the writer was visiting California. They lived together in San Rafael, always leaving the impression of a happy couple.
Allende was married before to Miguel Frias, the father of her two children, Nicolas and Paula, who died in 1992, at age 28, from porphyria. Willie Gordon also suffered great losses: two of his children, a daughter and a son, died of drug overdose.
